April 2022 News & Highlights

A Word from Dr. Gurley

Portrait of Dr. GurleyDear families,

We are celebrating an enormous win for our students: Our hopes for school reconfiguration are now becoming a reality. Within five years, we will see our elementaries become K-5 schools, with our current kindergarteners on track to be the first class of 5th graders in their neighborhood schools. Buford Middle School will become a proper 6-8 middle school, with vast improvements to facilities and learning spaces. Walker will become a centralized preschool that provides wraparound services for qualifying students and their families. See our website for details.

Our community has said for more than ten years that these changes are necessary for our students’ future success. I am grateful to our City Council and city staff for their work and commitment in this difficult but ultimately very meaningful process. Thank you also to each one of you who contributed your time and voice, from project design to advocating for funding.

Read on below for more good news and updates from around our division.

And, this month many of our families are observing important holidays including Easter, Passover and Ramadan. I wish all those celebrating a peaceful, memorable time with friends and loved ones.

Sincerely,

Dr. Royal A. Gurley, Jr.
