    2018 Walker and Buford Spring Highlights and News

    Walker student Hazel Conklin won the stockpile division at the regional soap box derby in Culpeper! She was assisted in this STEM project by Troy Brown, Elias Garcia, and Oliver Jackson (not pictured). Congrats also to their advisor, iSTEM teacher Chris Chamberlin. Hazel has qualified to compete in the Local Masters Race this June, also in Culpeper. Students Hallie Goode and Allie Floyd have been awarded the Red Cross Youth Heroes Award for our region for their kindness and persistence in helping and befriending Walker’s functional skills students.  Way to model kindness and inclusivity, girls!     Summer Awards and Special Recognitions

    School may be out for the summer, but many of our students are busy at work making presentations at conferences and receiving awards and opportunities at the state and national level. CHS student Cole Fairchild and engineering teacher Matt Shields were selected as part of the 2018 cohort of Bezos Scholars and recently attended an all-expenses paid trip to the Aspen Ideas Festival. Each year, the Bezos Family Foundation selects rising public high school seniors who apply with an educator partner to the year-long leadership development program.  After attending the festival, scholars return home to organize their own community change projects, known as ...

    Buford Principal Announcements

    Dear Buford families– We have two important announcements about the future of Buford. The first is that at the end of this year, Mr. Eric Johnson will be leaving Buford to become the principal of Charlottesville City Schools’ hospital education program at U.Va. Medical Center. We are tremendously appreciative of Mr. Johnson’s service at Buford and are delighted that he will remain on the Charlottesville Schools staff in this new position. Charlottesville and Cville Schools sponsor several summer opportunities for Buford students: CHS Summer School (for rising 9th-graders and older) Buford Summer School (information coming soon) Buford Engineering Design Academy:  applications are due 4/16 (see Mr. Martin) Kids College at CATEC (rising 7th-10th graders) Charlottesville Summer Youth Internships (ages 14 and older) Our community offers many other camps and special opportunities.     Fabulous Fine Arts @ Cville Schools

    Here are just a few highlights of what has been happening lately in the Fine Arts program at Charlottesville City Schools. The annual CHS Symphony/Chorus/Fine Arts Celebration featured all of the Charlottesville High School fine arts in one evening.  The performance combined the talents of the CHS Symphony, CHS Choir, CHS Jazz Band, CHS Visual Arts, and CHS Theatre. CHS Choir teacher Will Cooke noted that eight CHS Choir alumni were also singing among the choir.     Congratulations to our 2017 Geography Bee school champs: fifth grade Walker student Elias Garcia and Buford seventh grader Aidan Peters (repeat winner)! Our Minds in Motion Team XXL just gave a lively performance at TEDxCharlottesville at The Paramount Theater of Charlottesville. In partnership with the Richmond Ballet, Minds In Motion provides our Walker and Buford  students a weekly opportunity to learn about dance, dedication, and performance. Walker teacher Ms. Cynthia Scheiber was selected as Monticello Media’s Teacher of the Month for October.
