    Buford/Walker: October 2016 Highlights

    Buford Middle School enjoyed another successful Harvest Festival, celebrating the school’s amazing garden and community. Thanks to City Schoolyard Garden for their leadership! Buford students and their U.Va. mentors collected more than 2,000 pounds of food for the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank through their involvement with the Young Women Leaders Program. Buford engineering students recently made a presentation at the Smithsonian’s American History Museum to teach national leaders from education, technology, science, history, & math about the school’s innovative engineering partnership with U.Va, the Smithsonian, and other partners.     Buford/Walker Highlights for September 2016

    U.S. Secretary of Education John King visited Buford Middle School as one of the first stops on his Back-to-School Bus Tour, crossing the country to highlight school success stories. Past and current Buford engineering students led the visitors in engineering activities. The Buford engineering program has received international attention; it is a partnership with other area public schools, U.Va., PVCC, and the Smithsonian Institute.  Earlier in the summer, Buford staff and students presented at the International Society of Technology Education in Denver, and still other students and staff participated in a two-week engineering academy at U.Va. to continue developing the ...

    Buford Middle School Hosts U.S. Secretary of Education

    Stop on the National “Back-to-School Bus Tour” Honors Engineering Innovations U.S. Secretary of Education John B. King Jr. and senior Department of Education officials will visit Buford Middle School on Monday afternoon, September 12, as part of the DOE’s Back-to-School Bus Tour to celebrate progress in communities and states across the country. At Buford Middle School, the focus will be on the innovative middle-school engineering curriculum developed by Albemarle and Charlottesville public schools in partnership with the University of Virginia, Piedmont Virginia Community College, and the Smithsonian Institution. Buford Greatness is more than just a motto! Caroline McLellan placed third in her category at the History Day state competition.  In addition, her documentary won the Sons of the American Revolution Award.     Buford Orchestra AND Band Both Named Grand Champions

    At two separate state-wide musical competitions, the Buford Orchestra and Band both earned the Grand Champion award. At the King’s Dominion Festival of Music, the Buford Band earned: the highest possible rating of Superior (with all scores 97 or higher). best middle school band — with 11 others in the category! Grand Champion of bands, beating several high school bands for the honor. At the Musicale Competition in Williamsburg, the Buford Orchestra earned: the highest possible rating of Superior (with an average score of 99!), but also placing first in Class I-C, AND earning the title of Grand Champion, the award that goes to the highest-scoring group of the competition. ...

    Buford and Walker Highlights: March 2016

    Buford News Congratulations to the Buford debate teams, who won both 1st & 2nd place at a recent U.Va. debate tournament. Both the Buford band and orchestra earned straight superiors at their district assessments! 7th-graders got an insider’s tour of the U.Va. Medical Center to explore a variety of careers in the fast-growing field of health care. Students visited the helipad, medical imaging, the medical simulation center and the nursing simulation center. The Buford boys’ basketball team earned 2nd place in an area middle school basketball tournament, with an impressive record of 14 wins for the season.  The spring sports season is now underway with track & ...

    Buford Highlights, February 2016

      A team of “mathletes” at Buford claimed 1st place in the MATHCOUNTS regional competition. Congratulations, and good luck at states! The new BACON Bits science team competed in their first Science Olympiad, earning 2nd in the Bio-Process Lab event! The club gets its name from BACON, the Best All-around Club of Nerds, at CHS. Buford students Eleanor Brown, Ella Harrigan, and Margaret Folger earned 1st, 2nd, and honorable mention in the poetry and prose categories of the Writer’s Eye competition sponsored by U.Va.’s Fralin Museum of Art.
