  • April 2020 News and Highlights

A Word from Superintendent Dr. Rosa Atkins Dear staff, family, and community: When I first thought about a column for this month’s “News and Highlights,” I thought that it would be all news and no highlights. During this pandemic, we are focused on finding solutions and passing the information along to you. So, yes, there is a lot of news in this email. However, I also realized that even in this challenging time, we have a lot of highlights, too! Can we give a virtual round of applause to the custodial staff who kept our students and staff safe prior to the closure? ...

Visit to “Bear Mountain” teaches students about Monacan Nation, culture, identity

Second grade students at Burnley-Moran Elementary recently visited Amherst, Virginia to learn more about the Monacan Nation, a state-recognized Indian tribe located near Bear Mountain in Amherst County. • Student and teacher/parent at Multicultural Day.

    Multicultural Day presents “living museum”

Students had the opportunity to learn about more than 20 different countries in the annual Multicultural Day, a day that featured student projects, authentic cuisine, and other unique items from countries around the world. As various grade levels visited the “living museum” throughout the day, students could ask questions, sample new foods, and get their passports stamped.  Thanks to ESL teacher Tracy Hardley for organizing this fun day for our community to celebrate diversity. See more photos from Multicultural Day here. See news coverage here.
