What’s Happening at Charlottesville High School

    VA Sec. of Ed visits as division celebrates VA Farm to School, Healthy Schools Week, and Buford Fall Harvest Festival

    Charlottesville City Schools, in partnership with City Schoolyard Garden, celebrated a week of garden activities, visits from farm animals, and made-from-scratch lunches made with local ingredients provided by area farmers through Local Food Hub. During Charlottesville Healthy Schools Week and VA Farm to School Week students sampled a variety of healthy foods including farmer’s market salsa and vegetable soup while also taste-testing local goat cheese, pears, and apples.     Graduation Rates Rise; Community Forum on Equity Scheduled for 10/23

    Continuing a pattern of growth, the Charlottesville High School on-time graduation rate rose to 92.6 percent for the class of 2018, which exceeds the state’s overall rate. The drop-out rate fell to 4.8 percent, also superior to the state’s rate. The on-time graduation rate also rose for African-American students in Charlottesville, hitting 88.3 percent. Since 2006, this rate for Charlottesville’s black students has risen almost 25 points. “We are so proud of our students and the staff who support them. Niche ranks nearly 100,000 schools and districts based on statistics and millions of opinions from students and parents.     Having trouble creating your PowerSchool account? Need to add a child to the account? Want a hand finishing up your back-to-school forms? Working on your free/reduced lunch application?     Summer Awards and Special Recognitions

    School may be out for the summer, but many of our students are busy at work making presentations at conferences and receiving awards and opportunities at the state and national level. CHS student Cole Fairchild and engineering teacher Matt Shields were selected as part of the 2018 cohort of Bezos Scholars and recently attended an all-expenses paid trip to the Aspen Ideas Festival. Each year, the Bezos Family Foundation selects rising public high school seniors who apply with an educator partner to the year-long leadership development program.  After attending the festival, scholars return home to organize their own community change projects, known as ...

    Freshman Orientation-Welcome 9th Grade Students!

    Ninth-graders: Come meet new classmates, get your schedules, and tour CHS! Date:  TBD Time: Orientation begins promptly at 9am and will finish at 1:30pm. What: This is a required — but fun — program for all incoming freshmen. Students will receive their schedules, tour the school, and meet with their upperclassmen mentors, Link Crew Leaders. Lunch is provided. Transportation: School buses will be running their regular fall routes to transport students to the building. Buses will drop students off at the MLK Performing Arts Center entrance. Buses will transport students back home at the conclusion of the orientation program at 1:30pm.     Junior Zyahna Bryant was selected as the winner of the 2018 Princeton Prize in Race Relations (DC Region) and the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center’s 2018 Student Stowe Prize! PC: Matt Eich. On February 13, CHS hosted a ribbon-cutting to celebrate a new partnership, the CHS/CFA Institute Finance Academy. The partnership supports financial education and cultivates interest and awareness of the investment profession. The  CHS/CFA Institute Finance Academy will impact three programs at CHS: the Student Investment Group (see next item!), the AVID program (including a business-style renovation of the AVID seniors’ classroom, and the economics and personal finance classes required of all CHS ...
