Charlottesville City Schools and the City’s Energy and Water Management Team are working together to reduce the energy and water footprint of all City schools. In 2019, the School Board approved an Energy and Water Performance resolution, showing a commitment to achieving and maintaining high performing school facilities. Continuing on past efforts, the City’s maintenance and development teams are specifying high efficiency building equipment, such as high-efficiency chillers and LED lighting, and are enhancing operational control through advanced building automation systems. A Word from Superintendent Dr. Rosa Atkins Dear staff, family, and community: It’s official — Charlottesville High School’s “Victory Lap” was triumphant! The drive-through graduation event featured several CHS-related selfie stations (including a mural painted by CHS teacher Nathan Alexander) and a Black Knights spirit station. And it concluded with the graduates walking across the stage with their name read aloud as families watched from the car and nearby teachers and staff cheered. Cars were decorated. When school reopened after winter break, Jackson-Via students and staff returned to find the finishing touches complete on their 2019 modernization projects. *Video courtesy VMDO Architects in-house production/Asa Eslocker The project included new paint throughout the building, daylighting for more natural light, new technology and furnishings, beautiful way-finding guides, and more. As with the 2018 work at Clark Elementary, fourth-graders saw the biggest impact in their spaces. Designed by VMDO Architects, the work is part of an annual appropriation of $1-1.25 million by the City of Charlottesville for modernization (in addition to annual maintenance of school facilities). The Walker Upper Elementary School school counselors are busy planning their annual visits to all city elementary schools to provide information and guidance to rising fifth graders.
