Charlottesville City Schools is pleased to announce that Dr. Justin Malone will be the new principal of Charlottesville High School, effective July 1. Dr. Malone's selection comes after an extensive search process involving a diverse panel of staff, parents/guardians, and current CHS students.
Dr. Malone has worked in Charlottesville City Schools since 2013. He has served as the principal of Charlottesville's Jackson-Via Elementary School since 2017. Prior to that, he was an assistant principal at CHS from 2013-2017.
"We are delighted to welcome Dr. Malone back to CHS," said Dr. Royal A. Gurley, Jr., Superintendent of Charlottesville City Schools. "In a strong field of applicants, he stood out for his administrative and interpersonal skills, combined with his deep understanding of our community and commitment to academic excellence."
“I am honored to return to Charlottesville High School,” noted Dr. Malone. “I know what makes CHS such a special and thriving school and I am committed to sharing with our students, our staff, and our community what makes CHS a safe and successful place. My previous experience at CHS and all of my years working in Charlottesville City Schools have me prepared and excited to begin this important work.”
Dr. Malone's career in education began in Greene County Public Schools, where he served as a special education teacher, a special education coordinator, and an elementary and middle school assistant principal. He holds a B.S. and M.S. from Old Dominion University and earned his Doctorate in Education from the University of Virginia. Additionally, Dr. Malone has served as a doctoral advisor and adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University.
Dr. Malone has demonstrated a strong commitment to academic gains at both CHS and Jackson-Via, particularly for groups such as students with disabilities. During his time at CHS, the graduation rate rose 14 points. His leadership has been instrumental in implementing various initiatives at schools and in the division, including tiered systems of supports, positive school culture, peer-to-peer mentoring, and the adoption of technical solutions like Canvas.
CHS will begin publicizing events and times when Dr. Malone will be attending PTO meetings, sporting events, or other occasions to start building or deepening relationships.
