Offering Families an After-School Option
CLASS provides a stimulating, fun after-school experience for Charlottesville students in kindergarten through grade six. The program is available at the end of the school day and on some staff planning days at every elementary school and at Walker Upper Elementary. A morning CLASS program is offered at Walker if there is sufficient enrollment. CLASS tuition is based on family income, full or part-time enrollment, and the services selected.
The mission of the CLASS program is to create a safe, reliable, and caring learning environment for students and their families.
CLASS began in 1976 when working parents of Jackson-Via Elementary School requested an after-school enrichment program from the Charlottesville City School Board. Over the next several years, CLASS expanded to all Charlottesville City elementary schools.
At Walker Upper Elementary School, CLASS complements the EDGE after-school clubs and offers a before-school enrichment program. For summer programming, please see the City of Charlottesville’s Parks and Rec Camps.
CLASS staff members are trained educators with a passion for expanding young minds. Activities are designed to engage each child’s mind, body, and creative spirit. Children explore a range of experiences including drama, sports, science, cooking, music, arts, field trips, and games through hands-on activities. With the support and encouragement of staff, children learn to value their own individuality while recognizing and celebrating the uniqueness of others.
The biggest endorsement of CLASS comes from parents who say their children are reluctant to leave because they are so involved in their CLASS activities.
