Serving 4,500 students in 11 schools, Charlottesville Schools promote small class sizes. We support one of the lowest average student-to-teacher ratios in the state, which encourages teachers to attend to the unique needs of each child. The schools are rich with talented and dedicated teachers and exceptional support services.

We embrace new technologies and place them in the hands of our staff and students. Our fine and performing arts programs are recognized as among the best in Virginia. The division’s enrichment and after-school opportunities are highly acclaimed and provide both remedial assistance and exposure to a variety of activities to challenge and broaden the overall student experience.

General Benefits

We offer a generous and comprehensive benefits package to our employees, including:

Pay Tables

Charlottesville City Schools maintains competitive staff salaries and benefits packages to attract and maintain strong talent. Our salaries consistently rank among the top 10 percent of Virginia school divisions.

There are pay tables for licensed teaching staff, as well as a general table for non-exempt employees who clock in/out and are eligible for overtime pay, and an administrative table for instructional leaders, who are exempt but not eligible for overtime pay. View the guides in this section to see which positions on the general and administrative pay tables correspond to which pay grades.

Virginia Teacher Licensure Application Information

Pursuing a Virginia teaching license, Collegiate Professional License, Postgraduate Professional License, or Pupil Personnel Services License is an exciting step, and Charlottesville City Schools wants to help you navigate the application process smoothly.

Applicants may complete the paper copy of the application or complete the application online through Virginia Licensure Online (VALO).

If you have any questions, please visit the VDOE Teacher Licensure website or contact:

Charlottesville City Schools Human Resources Department
Licensure Specialist
Email: humanresources@charlottesvilleschools.org
Phone: (434) 245-2400

  • If you are already employed in a Virginia educational agency (a Virginia school division or Virginia-accredited nonpublic school), the process is streamlined: please submit your completed application packet directly to the Human Resources Department Licensure Specialist within your employing school division. A Provisional license, if necessary, may only be issued at the request of your Virginia employing school division or Virginia accredited nonpublic school.

If you completed a Virginia-approved preparation program but are not yet employed by a Virginia school division or accredited nonpublic school, you should request that the college/university or the Career Switcher program provider submit your application.

Please be aware that if an incomplete application packet is submitted, or if a license cannot be issued, your application will be retained for only one year, after which a new application must be submitted.

  • You may submit an application for an initial Virginia license if you meet the criteria in at least one of the following:

    • You have completed a state-approved preparation program, including student teaching or, at the graduate level, a clinical practicum or internship.
    • You hold an active, valid license from another state with no deficiencies and comparable endorsement(s) to those offered in Virginia.
    • You are currently employed full-time as an educator under contract by a Virginia school division or a Virginia accredited nonpublic school.
    • You are military personnel or a veteran applying for a Virginia license
  • To ensure your application is processed efficiently, please make sure you include documentation for the following steps:

    1. Application Form: Complete all questions, and ensure the forms are in the same format as provided in the packet; the first page cannot be split into two pages. Provide original signatures and current dates on both pages of the form. VDOE requires your Social Security number for processing; if you do not provide it, your application will not be processed and no Virginia teaching license will be issued. If you respond affirmatively to any background questions in Part II, remember to attach a letter of explanation and requested documentation. Virginia Licensure Online (VALO) is also an available option for submitting initial licensure applications.
    2. Application Fee: Submit the nonrefundable application fee, which is $100 for in-state applicants and $150 for out-of-state applicants (determined by the address on your form). Payment must be made payable to the Treasurer of Virginia via certified check, cashier’s check, money order, or personal check. Alternatively, if you utilize the Pay Now feature on the Office of Licensure website, the receipt must be printed and submitted with your packet.
    3. College Verification Form: If you completed a state-approved undergraduate or graduate preparation program, the appropriate certification/licensure officer from that institution must complete this form. This verifies program completion and includes verification of your student teaching/practicum/internship experience (Part III). This form is not required if you hold an active out-of-state license with full credentials and no deficiencies and are only seeking comparable Virginia endorsement(s).
    4. Report on Experience: If you have completed at least one year of full-time contractual teaching or other contracted instructional school professional experience at a public or accredited nonpublic school, an appropriate official must complete this form. Do not include experience as a substitute teacher or aide.
    5. Professional Teacher’s Assessment Scores: Please include copies of the score reports for all required Virginia licensure assessments that you have taken and passed, as electronic scores sent from testing companies are not always transferred. Individuals who hold an active out-of-state license (full credential without deficiencies) may be exempted from the professional teacher assessment requirements.
    6. Official Student Transcripts: You must include official transcripts from all colleges and universities. If official transcripts were mailed directly to you, the envelope must remain sealed when submitted with the application packet. Electronic transcripts can be submitted directly to the employing school division or VDOE Office of Licensure via Parchment or National Student Clearinghouse. If you attended a college/university or earned a degree outside the United States, you must obtain an evaluation of your credentials from a member organization of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) or the Association of International Credentials Evaluators (AICE). Placement records, grade reports, photocopies, and student printouts of unofficial transcripts will not be accepted.
    7. Photocopy of Active Out-of-State License(s) (If Applicable): Include a photocopy of each active out-of-state license(s), and any additional documentation received with the license(s). If you completed an alternate route to licensure or hold an endorsement earned through assessment alone, submit supporting documentation.
    8. Statutory Requirements (Step 8): Include documentation to verify completion of all applicable statutory required trainings.
