Atkins Named One of Two Finalists for National Superintendent Award
Dr. Rosa S. Atkins, superintendent of Charlottesville City Schools, has been named one of two finalists for the AASA Women in School Leadership Award for Superintendents. Each year, the AASA, or School Superintendents Association, joins with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to offer awards recognizing the country’s outstanding female teacher (or school-based employee), principal, and superintendent. “We are so proud of Dr. Atkins and her leadership in Charlottesville and beyond. Stop on the National “Back-to-School Bus Tour” Honors Engineering Innovations U.S. Secretary of Education John B. King Jr. and senior Department of Education officials will visit Buford Middle School on Monday afternoon, September 12, as part of the DOE’s Back-to-School Bus Tour to celebrate progress in communities and states across the country. At Buford Middle School, the focus will be on the innovative middle-school engineering curriculum developed by Albemarle and Charlottesville public schools in partnership with the University of Virginia, Piedmont Virginia Community College, and the Smithsonian Institution. Seven Charlottesville City Schools staff and teachers received grants from the Edgar and Eleanor Shannon Foundation for Excellence in Public Education. Totaling $6,214, the grants make possible six innovative educational projects, ranging from STEM fields to therapeutic games. “We are so appreciative of the Shannon Foundation for their generosity and support of public education in our area,” noted Jim Henderson, Associate Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. “The impact of these projects is significant, and these projects are a perfect tribute to Mr. and Mrs. Shannon.” Charlottesville grant-winners are: Lisa Dreyer, Buford Middle School, $710, “Circuit Girls”. In 2016, the Charlottesville City School division received a 2016 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools District Sustainability Award. Just 3 organizations in Virginia and 15 districts across the country were honored. The award recognizes innovative efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, improve health and wellness, and ensure effective sustainability education. The Charlottesville City Schools’ environmental program relies on community partnership. MORESchool Division NewsOutdoor Classroom Dedicated to Late, Beloved Walker Teacher Leslie Diehl
This spring, Walker Upper Elementary School dedicated a new cross-curricular outdoor classroom in memory of Leslie Diehl, a beloved science teacher at the school who passed away last year. The classroom was developed as part of an extension of City trails behind adjacent Crow Pool. The renovations to the trail and the classroom were a collaborative project between the City of Charlottesville and the schools. The Charlottesville High School Student Investment Group placed 4th on April 30 in an international competition sponsored by the Wharton Business School and Aberdeen Asset Management. In the finals, held in Philadelphia at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, CHS competed against 14 other teams from areas as far away as California and China. Although more than 500 teams from around the world entered the competition, CHS was the only Virginia team to reach the finals.
