Charlottesville City Schools

Student Wellness

Charlottesville City Schools recognizes the strong link between a child’s social, emotional, and physical health and their ability to learn. Schools also play an important role in teaching children about wellness. Guided by the Charlottesville City Schools Wellness Policy, our school division prioritizes the physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being of our students.

Physical Health

All schools offer physical education, and students in grades pre-K through grade 6 enjoy recess daily. Our goals for students in grades K-10 are to allow 200 minutes of physical activity per week through gym, recess, and classroom activities, a goal that is well beyond the state’s guidelines. We partner with organizations such as Charlottesville Safe Routes to School, the YMCA, Wildrock, and First Tee to provide instruction in swimming, bike safety, golf, and more.

Mental and Emotional Health

Charlottesville City Schools has a robust staff of mental health professionals in our schools. These staff members provide broad-based individual and group assessments, interventions, and referrals for mental and emotional health needs.

Social Well-being

One of the goals for Charlottesville City Schools is to promote a positive and inclusive culture in our learning communities. Relationships are at the heart of a thriving community and are also key to promoting safety. We strive to build relationships among and between staff, students, and families.

See individual school pages for information about how each school builds a unique, positive school culture–from clubs to pep rallies, annual fundraisers to spirit days, cultural celebrations and musical showcases.
