    On February 13, Charlottesville High School was pleased to host a ribbon-cutting to celebrate a new partnership, the CHS/CFA Institute Finance Academy. The aim is to support financial education and cultivate interest and awareness of the investment profession for students at CHS. The  CHS/CFA Institute Finance Academy will impact three programs at CHS: Student Investment Group In 2015, a self-started team of students called the Student Investment Group was established by student Lucas Higgins ’18. The club went on to excel in college-sponsored investment competitions hosted by both UVA and the Wharton School of Business at Penn. Furthermore, Lucas raised $25,000 to establish an ...

  • Science Bowl Team 2018

    CHS BACON Club Highlights

    The CHS BACON Club (Best All-around Club of Nerds), has had a busy winter full of activity,  achievements, and awards. Most recently, the BACON Science Bowl team upset powerhouse Langley High School in the state Science Bowl tournament and finished in second place. BACON advisor Dr. Matt Shields called the victory “truly bonkers.” “Our team went undefeated through the early brackets which landed them in the semi-finals against Langley,” said Dr. Shields,  “Already the best showing that BACON had ever had, the team was happy with what was looking like a third place medal.   • What a weekend for CHS!

    Pick your favorite CHS accomplishment from the  weekend (and yes, “all of the above” is an acceptable answer): AVID students earning $10,000 to support community service projects. Thanks, CFA Institute! BACON earning 2nd in Virginia in Science Bowl at Jefferson Lab. BACON was second only to the perennial champ, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology.   • Woodwind section of the Walker Elementary 5th grade band perform.

    Fabulous Fine Arts @ Cville Schools

    Here are just a few highlights of what has been happening lately in the Fine Arts program at Charlottesville City Schools. The annual CHS Symphony/Chorus/Fine Arts Celebration featured all of the Charlottesville High School fine arts in one evening.  The performance combined the talents of the CHS Symphony, CHS Choir, CHS Jazz Band, CHS Visual Arts, and CHS Theatre. CHS Choir teacher Will Cooke noted that eight CHS Choir alumni were also singing among the choir.   • Rehearsal for South Pacific production

    TheatreCHS presents “South Pacific” this week

    Charlottesville High School will present “South Pacific” February 22-25 at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing Arts Center (MLK PAC). Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults. Times are 7:30pm Thursday-Saturday and 3:00pm on Sunday. Click here to order tickets online.   This  award-winning Rodgers and Hammerstein  musical first appeared on Broadway in 1949 and re-emerged in a 2008 Broadway revival.     January 5, 2018 Dear families, As we begin 2018, it is a wonderful time to reflect on the flurry of activities and opportunities at Charlottesville City Schools. In December, our high school students wrapped up their final semester exams, seniors finalized their college applications, and our Zero Robotics Team advanced to the final round of a global coding competition.  Other students fine-tuned their instruments and voices for a host of local holiday performances in our schools and community, and the CHS Marching Band traveled to London to march in the London New Year’s Day Parade!     Facilities planning for the future

    Facilities: A Brief Update (January 14, 2020) The schools continue progress on the school reconfiguration plan approved in 2019 (see February 11, 2019 update, below). In December 2019, the city posted an RFP for design and planning services for Buford (which will house grades 6-8) and Walker (which will be the site of a city-wide preschool center while 5th graders return to elementary schools). The RFP closes on January 30, 2020. In addition, the separate process for accomplishing modernization projects (with an annual budget of $1-1.25 million) at the elementary schools continued.   • Concert for Charlottesville features CHS music video

     A music video collaboration produced by Charlottesville High School and Metro Nashville Public Schools  was featured among the long line-up of musical performers at the Dave Matthew’s Band Concert for Charlottesville in September . “To see all of us up on the jumbotron at the Dave Matthews concert was truly a thrill,” said CHS Orchestra Teacher Laura Mulligan Thomas. “I get goose bumps every time I think about it.  It was our students singing and playing and trying to promote a positive message.” The music video features 50 CHS orchestra students and 30 members of the CHS choir, along with Nashville’s Fab ...

  • We Welcome Nashville Students and Staff!

    Charlottesville City Schools will host a special group of visitors from the Metro Nashville Public Schools later this week to collaborate on a joint musical recording of entertainer BeBe Winan’s song “Right Now (We Need One Another).” The Fabulous 5, an ensemble of five Nashville area high school students, recorded a touching music video in response to the recent events in Charlottesville and sent it to the CCS staff.
