Whether a student has a complex disability or just needs a little extra help, the SEAC helps make sure our schools are meeting the needs of each student.

  • Meetings are open to all Charlottesville City Schools families, and all public comments are welcome.

    All meetings are held at the Brooks Family YMCA.

    The Special Education Advisory Committee strives to have a representative from each school. All SEAC meetings are open to the public.

What does the Special Education Advisory Committee do?

  • Give advice about unmet needs in special education
  • Help develop plans for improving performance of students with disabilities
  • Take part in developing ways to meet needs of students with disabilities
  • Access and review needs/plans for special education, submit reports and recommendations to the Superintendent and School Board
  • Assist the school system in interpreting plans to the community for meeting the special needs of children with disabilities for educational services.

Special Education Parent/Family Liaison

Beginning in the 2024-2025 School Year, the School Board designates a faculty member to serve as a special education parent/family liaison, who serves as a resource to parents and families to understand and engage in the referral, evaluation, reevaluation, and eligibility process if they suspect that their child has a disability and the IEP process and works in collaboration with the special education family support centers established by the Parent Training and Information Center of the Commonwealth pursuant to Virginia Code § 22.1-214.5.
