Extracurriculars

Charlottesville students excel in academics, athletics, fine arts, and so many other areas. What are your student’s talents, skills, and passions? We want to build them up and cheer them on!

Athletics

CCS athletic programs start in middle school, with an emphasis on sportsmanship, healthy competition, and becoming a positive team player. At CMS, students have the opportunity to participate in football, volleyball, cheerleading, swimming, basketball, baseball, track, and softball. At CHS, they can additionally participate in cross country, field hockey, golf, wrestling, lacrosse, soccer, and tennis. 

Clubs and Activities

Extra-curricular activities build relationships, improve academic performance, and add extra fun to the school day. At our elementaries, teachers and parent-volunteers lead clubs in areas like photography, cooking, or dancing. At CMS and CHS, extracurricular clubs and activities include everything from music to debate to foreign-language-interest groups.

To encourage our students to participate in extra-curricular activities, our middle and high school provide an after-school activities bus that returns students home after clubs or sports practices. (CHS offers an activities bus at two different times). Contact your school for details.

After-School Programs

After-school enrichment programs for students are offered at our preschool and elementary schools in partnership with the Piedmont Family YMCA. YMCA After School operates every day that children attend school, beginning at school dismissal and closing at 5:30 pm.

Students also have the opportunity to participate in the Cherry Avenue Boys & Girls Club, with bus transportation to the club at dismissal, closing at 6:30pm.

Connect sites are run by the City of Charlottesvile and serve kindergarten through 12 grade enrolled in Charlottesville City Schools. Participants can enjoy fun activities in a safe and positive environment. Each location offers a free meal. .

School Breaks

YMCA School's Out Camp

The YMCA School’s Out Camp is for children ages 5-12 on select school days off, including swimming, playing games, and doing arts and crafts.

Parks & Rec Winter Break Camp

The City of Charlottesville offers a weeklong winter break camp for ages 5-12 with games, and a variety of new activities, including a a 1 day-long field trip.

Summer Opportunities

 Our schools offer numerous summer opportunities for students including enrichment, credit recovery, and completion of graduation requirements. To learn more, speak with your teacher, school counselor, or principal.

We also maintain a listing of summer opportunities run by the schools, the City, or our program partners, with activities that are free, financially accessible, or offer scholarships. 

2026 Summer Opportunities

Elementary

CCS partners with the YMCA to provide a summer academy to serve rising 1st-6th grade students.

Middle School

Charlottesville Middle School offers summer remediation and enrichment courses in reading and math. In addition, students in grades 5-8 can also apply for the two-week Reflections Governors Art School (hosted by Charlottesville City Schools) for students gifted in the visual arts.

High School

Over the summer, CHS offers economics/personal finance, health/PE, and credit recovery. In addition, CHS annually sends students to the highly competitive Governor’s Schools in a variety of disciplines.
