Kindergarten
We are thrilled to welcome new kindergarteners each fall!
There are six neighborhood elementary schools in Charlottesville City Schools.
- Greenbrier
- Jackson-Via
- Summit (formerly Clark)
- Sunrise (formerly Burnley-Moran)
- Tall Oaks (formerly Johnson)
- Trailblazer (formerly Venable)
Students are assigned to a school based on their address. Which school will your child attend? Find out here.
- A word about new attendance zones for our elementary schools:
- You can learn more about rezoning here. If your family is impacted and you wish to “start early” at your new school, register (or re-register) using the currently zoned school, then complete the out of zone request form. More information will be released when registration opens in the spring.
Students entering Charlottesville City Schools for the first time must register at the school the child will attend. In order to enroll, potential kindergarteners must be 5 years old by September 30. An open house for kindergarten registration occurs every year in mid-to-late April.

How to Register
Registration forms for each fall typically open up the spring before. Instructions to register kindergarteners are on our Registration Page under “Registering a New Student.”
A note about required documents: If you do not choose to upload proof of residency and other documents (see list below) during online registration, bring them to the school’s registration day (held annually in April!) Or someone from your child’s school will be in touch later about how you can bring the documents to the school.
What is the required documentation to enroll in Charlottesville City Schools?
Students enrolling in the Charlottesville City Schools for the first time must provide:
- Original birth certificate or certified copy
- Proof of residency
- A parent or legal guardian must submit two proofs of residency in the City of Charlottesville, one from each column. Post office boxes and driver's licenses are not considered proof of residency. To prove residency in Charlottesville City, you must provide:
| One of these | AND | One of these |
|
|
- A physical examination signed by a qualified licensed physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant is required for all students in grades PK-5 before the student can attend school. A completed school health entrance form showing that the child has received a physical examination performed by a physician within a year of enrollment. Suggestion: Call your doctor’s office to ask if they’ll fax your child’s form to your school. Fax numbers are listed with the school registrar contact list, below.
- A completed immunization record (part of the “school health entrance form”)
- Custody or guardianship paperwork (if necessary)
- Don’t have everything? Bring what you have to the school, and they will help you.
School divisions are required to accept students who meet residency requirements under § 22.1-3 of the Code of Virginia and may not deny a free public education to undocumented school-age children who reside within their jurisdiction because they do not hold valid United States citizenship or a student visa. Questions should be addressed to the Director of Student Services at 245-2405.
