Draft Elementary Zone Maps Now Available: Your Feedback is CRITICAL!

Dear Charlottesville City Schools staff and families,

In this message you will find links to four draft options of new elementary attendance zones for your review. In all four options, changes are proposed for all six elementary school zones (Burnley-Moran, Greenbrier, Jackson-Via, Johnson, Summit, and Trailblazer), impacting between 14-28% of students. Changes to zones are expected to go into effect in Fall 2026. 

Your involvement and feedback at this moment are critical to ensuring that new zones reflect the community’s vision for our schools. 

THREE WAYS TO GET INVOLVED


1. LEARN ABOUT THE OPTIONS

We invite you to review the FOUR DRAFT OPTIONS being considered for elementary school zone maps. All materials are NOW available to review on the Charlottesville City Schools Rezoning Website (including an address locator to see school assignments for each option). For assistance in navigating these maps and data tables, we recommend watching this video overview of the options by our consultant, Karen Jackson.  



2. ATTEND AN UPCOMING MEETING

The following community meetings are open to the public: 

  • Monday, October 28 (in-person only): Greenbrier, 5-7pm 

  • Tuesday, October 29 (in-person only): Jackson-Via, 4-6pm 

  • Wednesday, October 30 (in-person only): Summit, 5-7pm 

  • Wednesday, November 6 (Zoom only): 12-1:30pm (register here) and 6-7:30pm (register here)


 3. After reviewing the options and/or attending a meeting, TAKE THE SURVEY.

  • Maximizing walkability 

  • Maximizing bus route efficiency

  • Adhering to recognized neighborhood boundaries where possible

  • Maintaining or improving diversity/demographic balance across schools

  • Maximizing the sustainability of the new zone map (minimum 5 years before any future rezoning). 

Feedback being collected now will be incorporated into revisions prior to producing a recommendation for the School Board. The new zones are anticipated to go into effect for Fall 2026.
