Lugo-McGinness Principal Named New Director of Organizational Supports
Charlottesville City Schools has named Dr. Lamont K. Trotter the division’s new Director of Organizational Supports, starting July 1. In this role he will oversee the division’s alternative education programs for elementary, middle, and high school to ensure that they lead to strong outcomes for all students. He will also serve as the division’s ombudsman, resolving conflicts and addressing concerns raised by families and community members.
Trotter has served as principal of Lugo-McGinness Academy, Charlottesville’s alternative high school, since 2023, where he is known for his commitment to student-centered innovation and support. Through LMA as well as Knight School, an evening education option for teens, Trotter has strengthened pathways for students who need a second chance at school, including credit recovery and career readiness. Additionally, under his leadership, Lugo-McGinness Academy was awarded an Excellence in Civic and Community Engaged Partnership Award by Campus Compact, in partnership with YouthNex at UVA, for its work engaging students in research and advocacy. Trotter also has served as the division’s discipline hearing officer, exercising fairness and consistency in the process of upholding student rights and responsibilities.
“Dr. Trotter is a true advocate for our students,” said Superintendent Dr. Royal A. Gurley. “In this role, he will ensure that all of our students’ needs are understood and that their strengths are valued.”
Prior to coming to Charlottesville City Schools, Trotter was a principal in Richmond City Schools from 2018 to 2023. He previously served as principal and assistant principal in middle and high schools in Virginia, Washington, DC, and North Carolina, as well as teaching special education and history. He holds a BA in Special Education, an MA in Educational Leadership and Supervision, and a Doctor of Educational Leadership, all from Virginia State University.
A search for a new principal of Lugo-McGinness Academy is now underway.
