The first weekend of May is shaping up to be an exciting one for Charlottesville City Schools.

From Friday evening until Sunday night, the calendar is packed with a variety of events throughout the city that showcase our students and celebrate our community.

Friday, May 1

A display of diverse children's artwork, including paintings of animals, faces, and abstract designs, is showcased in a window.

ArtConnections Opening Celebration

Charlottesville City Schools’ ArtConnections Opening Celebration will take place on the Downtown Mall during Fridays After Five. As part of the celebration, the Charlottesville High School Jazz Band will perform at the Ting Pavilion at 5:30pm. There also will be a special student art projection. The presentation running time is about 15 minutes and will repeat throughout the Fridays After Five musical performances. Learn more about ArtConnections

Aidan Peters Memorial Classic

The Charlottesville High School baseball team will compete in the third annual Aidan Peters Memorial Classic on Saturday at UVA’s Disharoon Park. The event is named in honor of CHS graduate Aidan Peters, who passed away in 2023 following a battle with cancer. The Black Knights will face Jefferson District rival Monticello at 10am in the first game of a doubleheader. Miller School and St. Anne’s-Belfield will meet in the second game of the event at 1pm. Walker Farewell Party

Walker Upper Elementary School will host a farewell party on Saturday, May 2 from 11am until 2pm. Walker and Buford opened simultaneously in August 1966 as the two junior high schools in the city. This fall, 60 years later, Walker will be transformed into the Charlottesville Early Learning Center, as sixth-grade students move to Charlottesville Middle School and fifth-grade students head to CCS’s six elementary schools. The farewell party will include food, music, caricatures, a bounce house and much more. Students who attend the event must be accompanied by an adult. Members of the Walker community are invited to share their memories of the school at this link.
