The City of Charlottesville values education highly and the Charlottesville City School Division offers the very best in curriculum and community. We offer nine schools (see below), partner with Albemarle County Public Schools to operate the Charlottesville-Albemarle Technical Education Center, and oversee the Hospital Education Program at the UVA Children’s Hospital. Within our schools, we offer a range of services and special programs — including a robust virtual education program and the Lugo-McGinness Academy, and we partner with other community organizations to serve individual students’ needs. In 2019, the School Board committed to a school reconfiguration plan that will place sixth-graders at a redesigned Buford, return fifth-graders to the elementary schools, and create a designated early education center to better serve our preschoolers. These changes – supported by a $3 million Buford redesign allocation from City Council — are designed to place students in the most developmentally appropriate learning communities.
