Posted Date: 11/22/23 (11:40 AM)

Dear Cville Schools community –

Thank you for your continued patience and support as we held our CHS staff workdays. This is an update for you about what we’ve worked on this week as well as upcoming communications and events. We want to keep you updated as we look forward to our CHS students’ return to school on Monday and welcome our new interim principal, Mr. Kenny Leatherwood

This email contains:

  • Volunteer (and substitute teacher) information and ways to support CHS

  • A heads up that more detailed info will go to CHS families on Sunday

  • An invitation to an information and feedback session on Thursday evening at 6pm

  • A recap of the teacher workdays and the CUPE teacher panel

Thanks for your support as we continue to work to refine our practices and plans for supporting our staff and students at CHS on Monday and beyond.

How to Help: We’re Hiring Substitute Teachers & On-Boarding Volunteers

  • Substitutes: One key way to strengthen our high school is to grow our team of substitute teachers. If you would enjoy working with our students and have flexibility in your schedule, please consider signing up as a substitute. After your training, you would select the days you are available.

  • Volunteers: We welcome you to sign up as a volunteer for CHS. The volunteer page of our website has the information you’ll need to sign up and to complete training. All volunteers should bring your government-issued photo ID in order to volunteer. Thanks to everyone who has expressed willingness to help us provide a positive atmosphere for learning, along with a sense of belonging and safety.

More Information Coming Sunday to CHS Community

On Sunday afternoon, the CHS community can expect to receive a communication about the ways we will welcome our Black Knights back to classes on Monday, as well as other upcoming and long-term improvements to school safety and culture.

Upcoming Information and Feedback Session: Thursday, November 30, 6pm

Join us on Thursday, November 30, for presentations about some of the immediate and pending changes you will be seeing at CHS, followed by brief Q&A and discussion groups to collect community feedback for the School Board and administration. The meeting will start at 6pm at CHS (space TBD). Please RSVP here if you plan to attend in person. Or register via Zoom here.

Students are welcome to join us. In addition, we are planning opportunities to hear our students' voices during school hours.

Update about Yesterday’s Teacher Workday and the CUPE Teacher Panel

Thanks to so many of you who attended Monday’s teacher panel hosted by Charlottesville United for Public Education. During the event, CHS teachers on the panel expressed the positive energy and forward movement generated as staff and admin came together during Monday’s teacher workday at CHS. When asked if there would be improvements to procedures and routines at CHS on Monday, teachers responded yes, and that they believe there was a unified will among CHS staff to sustain positive change. Having said that, the teacher panel reminded the audience that while some changes would be immediate, others will be implemented more gradually. There is work to do. If you would like to watch the recording, click here. Throughout Monday and Tuesday, teachers and admin worked together to craft details for practical and immediate changes to CHS practices, plan a student assembly for Monday, and make progress on longer term focus areas. Their work was unfortunately interrupted on Tuesday afternoon to a building evacuation, but staff are receiving email updates, they have the opportunity to connect with Dr. Gurley via phone or zoom, and the staff will have a brief before-school meeting on Monday.
