August News & Highlights
Dr. Royal Gurley
A Word From Superintendent Royal A. Gurley, Jr.
Dear Cville Schools community–

With school starting on Wednesday, August 14, I wanted to give you some updates and a timeline for when to expect additional back-to-school information like bus routes or teacher assignments. And we wanted to catch you up on what we’ve been working on this summer.
Each month, you’ll receive one of these “News and Highlights” newsletters, with school celebrations plus news you can use.

Other ways you can stay connected with us include:
  • Come to your upcoming school open house to start building relationships! (Many of our open houses are on Monday, August 12. Find information here or in communications from your school)
  • Download the ParentSquare app to find all your school and class updates in one place (information below).
  • Follow us on social media – @CvilleSchools is on Facebook, Instagram, X, and YouTube. Your schools and PTOs have social media accounts, too. You can find me on X at @royalgurley. Here's a listing of CCS accounts you can follow.
  • Visit charlottesvilleschools.org to find “all the things” related to Cville Schools.

Once school starts, we’ll be in touch about more ways to follow your child’s academic growth. Let’s stay connected because we are #bettertogetherCCS!

Wishing you and yours a great start to the school year,

Dr. G

Future Charlottesville Middle School
Under Construction: Charlottesville Middle School
Progress over the summer on the soon-to-be Charlottesville Middle School has been astonishing, and the project is currently on time and on budget. In June we held a “topping off ceremony” at Buford to celebrate the installation of the last beam. Click for a chart showing when students will move into the future Grade 6-8 middle school.

Personalized Back-to-School Communications
Here’s a schedule for when information will go out via ParentSquare:

Monday, August 5
  • Bus eligibility/routing information (At this time, there is a bus seat for EVERY eligible rider who requested service!!)
  • Student meal PINs (same as last year) – remember, ALL students can receive meals for FREE!
  • Student Google passwords for you to share with your student (this is reset every year). Remind your Buford/CHS student to add your email address to their Gmail contacts so that your emails don't get caught in spam!

Wednesday, August 7 (Late afternoon)
  • Teacher assignments for elementary students

Friday, August 9 (Late morning)
  • Schedules for students in grade 5 and above

Zoning Conversations to Begin
As new housing is built and the City's population grows, we are facing potential overcrowding or the need to install learning cottages at some elementary schools unless we revise our school zones. We have received proposals for firms to assist us with these potential revisions. If recommended and approved, zoning changes could go into effect as early as August 2025. While this conversation is “new” in Charlottesville, attendance zone revisions are a common occurrence in most school divisions to prevent overcrowding. Learn more about our rezoning process and stay tuned for ways to engage this fall.

Phones off and away the entire day-stop sign
Cell Phone Policy at Cville Schools and in Virginia
In Cville Schools, we will maintain our current cell phone policy of “off and away the entire day” as we begin the school year. In September, Virginia will provide draft K-12 guidance and resources about cell phones. The state is hosting listening sessions now. Find details about the state's events here.
Innovation hub at Buford
7th Graders First to Experience "Innovation Hub" Lab School
In collaboration with UVA, Buford is now an "Innovation Hub" lab school. This year will be the program’s soft-launch for 7th graders. Students will undertake comprehensive, interdisciplinary projects designed to provide practical experience and exposure to various industries. Learn more about Innovation Hub plans.
School Board updates
School Board Updates, Including Safety News & Audit
Last night was the first School Board meeting of the year (they are typically on the first Thursday of the month at 5pm at the CHS media center). You can attend in person, via Zoom, on @CvilleSchools Facebook, or watch later on YouTube. Speakers can attend in person or via Zoom.

Read the Mini-Minutes from last night here. One item of note is that CHS principal Dr. Justin Malone discussed new safety procedures, ranging from better door monitoring to e-hall passes to the first of our bathroom renovations (with all-gender, single-staff restrooms). View the slides to learn more.

As part of the Board’s earlier request for an evaluation of our current safety model, the division has posted a request for proposals for professional services to assist with an audit. The next update on this process will be at a Board work session in October.

Interested in future meetings? Community members can sign up to receive notices of School Board meetings. Staff and Cville Schools families automatically receive notices.

🟠 ⚫ CHS AP SCORES HIT A HIGH 🟠 ⚫
The results are in, and this spring 82 percent of CHS students who took an AP exam scored a 3 or above. Wow! Take a look at the 5-year outlook to see the growth here (2024 also saw the highest number of students taking AP tests in that time period). Congratulations!

10-point grading scale
Changes to Grading
This school year we will start using a 10-point grading scale at Walker, Buford, and CHS. We will also continue transitioning grades 6–12 to standards-based grading, a system that documents students’ mastery and understanding of a class’s core skills and learning standards. Learn more at charlottesvilleschools.org/grading.

Mental Health Support Is Available
The back-to-school season can take an emotional toll on parents, students, and teachers alike. Cville Schools partners with Care Solace, a free, confidential service to help students, staff, and their families connect with mental health resources. To start a conversation about mental health, reach out to Care Solace or your school counselor.
Volunteers at CHS

Summit Elementary School signage in the works
It’s Official: Clark is Now Summit; Venable is Now Trailblazer
And CATEC now stands for “Charlottesville Area Technical Education Center.” Summit’s mascot will remain the Bees. Trailblazer’s new mascot will be the Eagles.

The school name review process will resume in the fall. The goal is to identify new names for Burnley-Moran and Johnson, and to begin the review process for our final two schools, Jackson-Via and Greenbrier. Stay tuned for more info.

Welcome, Kindergarteners!
Many of our littlest learners have already started the year, with a school visit for "Kindergarten Camp" this summer, like the student above at Trailblazer Elementary. We're so glad you're here, Class of 2037!
