Summer School

Teacher playing with Student

From remediation to enriching summer learning experiences, Charlottesville City Schools offers a variety of summer activities.

  • For our youngest students, our Elementary Schools offer summer school classes as well as a summer camp in cooperation with the City’s Parks and Recreation program.
  • Walker and Buford also offer summer classes.  In addition, students in grades 5-8 can also apply for the two-week Reflections Governor’s Art School (hosted by Charlottesville City Schools) for students gifted in the visual arts. Buford science teachers and selected students also participate in an engineering academy with the University of Virginia. Students who are learning English can also participate in a summer camp, which in 2015 was co-sponsored by CCS and Albemarle County Public Schools.
  • Charlottesville High School offers a variety of online and face-to-face summer programs for students who are making up credits or wish to take summer classes (like gym) to free up time in their schedules come fall.  Like Buford, CHS offers a summer program for students learning English.  In addition, CHS sends students to the highly competitive Governor’s Schools in a variety of disciplines.  Other CHS students participate in special program sponsored by the University of Virginia and other colleges and universities.  To learn more, see your counselor.
