STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math
STEM education is integrated into all levels of learning at Charlottesville City Schools. From coding in elementary school to a world-class high-school science club called BACON (Best All-around Club Of Nerds), CCS celebrates investigation and applied science learning for students.

• In 2016, Charlottesville City Schools developed an innovative iSTEM program that is active in all schools to teach foundational concepts, assist teachers in making math-science-technology connections, and build strong pathways into the division’s cutting-edge engineering programs at Buford Middle School and CHS.
• In 2014 and 2015, the division unveiled state-of-the-art engineering labs at Buford Middle School and Charlottesville High School.  The Buford engineering program is a collaboration with the engineering and education schools at the University of Virginia, the Smithsonian Institution, and other area school divisions.  At CHS, the engineering program continues, culminating in a fifth-year capstone project, and it is complemented by a wide array of other STEM pathways that culminate in virtually every possible science, math,  and coding AP class.

Partnerships
Partnerships are another big element of our STEM education.  Through our schools’ partnership with City Schoolyard Garden, our students can see science come to life in our garden classrooms. Our schools also work with individuals and departments at the University of Virginia to support STEM learning in areas such as engineering and health sciences.
