Dear Buford, CHS, and LMA families,

I hope this message finds you well and excited for the school year. As the Director of Technology for Charlottesville City Schools, I wanted to share some important information with you about your student’s school-issued Chromebook.

All students in grades 7-12 receive a school-issued Chromebook. Throughout the school day, students may be asked to use their Chromebook to access instructional platforms such as Canvas for materials and resources designed to support their learning.
Agreements for Using School-Issued Chromebooks
As students sign onto their Chromebook each day, they agree to the following as part of the log-in process:
  • I will use this computer responsibly and for school purposes.
  • I know that info on this computer is NOT private (it’s a school computer).
  • I will come to school on time. I will be ready to learn and ask questions if I need help.
  • I will follow and support the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SRR).
  • I will follow the Family Guide to Bus Safety when riding a bus.

These statements are based on: the Acceptable Technology Use Agreement and the Student Rights & Responsibilities.
Limiting Other Technology Use at School
Because overuse of cell phones (including extensive social media) can distract from learning and have a negative effect on mental health, Charlottesville City Schools has adopted an Off and Away All Day Policy for cell phones.

Web Filtering
Students in grades 7-12 have the privilege of taking school Chromebooks home to enrich their learning. Even while “off campus,” they still remain connected to our web filter known as Securly. Securly filters websites and content, blocking inappropriate sites and keywords.

Parental Controls and Monitoring
CCS is now offering Securly Home, a way for parents/guardians to see a snapshot of their child’s internet experience while on their school-issued device. Securly Home enables you to:
  • See a log of sites visited, recent searches, videos watched
  • Set offline schedules
  • Turn internet on or off with a single tap
  • Get weekly reports emailed to you

Interested in Securly Home?
If you are interested in accessing Securly Home, please complete this brief Securly Home request form

Thank you for working together with our schools to support students’ use of technology for their learning!
