Dear Charlottesville City Schools staff, families, and CHS students–

The School Board has requested feedback about three possible updates to our current safety model. If approved, any of the changes would be piloted at CHS. At this point, we are in feedback mode, not decision-making.

The three possible changes are:

  1. Using weapons detectors either at CHS sporting events and/or at CHS student arrival.

  2. Further exploring the idea of adding “Youth Resource Officers” from the police department to our current safety model based on the public schools in Cambridge, MA. The question is, “Do we want to learn more about this model?”

  3. Reconsidering the policy for student cellphones at CHS (not Buford). The question is, "Should high school students be allowed to use their phones between class periods and at lunch?"

These ideas were discussed at the February 1 School Board meeting, and this feedback will be presented at the March 7 School Board meeting.
